President Joe Biden has ended his reelection campaign less than a month before the Democratic National Convention.

"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President," Biden said in a letter addressed to Americans. "And while it has been my intention to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and my country for me to stand down and to focus solely on my duties as President for the rest of my term."

What does that mean for Vermont's Democratic delegates? Do they still have to vote for him?

Here’s what to know.

How many Democratic delegates does Vermont have?

Out of the 3,896 delegates nationally, Vermont has 16. This number comes from a Democratic bylaws formula, which is based on each state’s population and percentage of the total Democratic vote.

Do Vermont's delegates have to vote for Biden?

They do not. While all of Vermont's delegates were committed to Biden, DNC delegates don’t technically have to vote for Biden, thanks to a “good conscience” clause in Democratic delegate selection rules.

“All delegates to the National Convention pledged to a presidential candidate shall in all good conscience reflect the sentiments of those who elected them," the rules say.

When is the Democratic Party National Convention

The Democratic National Convention is scheduled to run Aug. 19 to 22 in Chicago.
