Two-time Vermont Amateur champion seizes Day 1 lead at Burlington Country Club

Welcome back to Burlington Country Club, Evan Russell.
The former Essex High School standout and two-time Vermont Amateur champion soared to the lead Tuesday following the opening round of the 118th edition of the championship tournament.
Russell, who captured the second of back-to-back crowns at BCC exactly 10 years ago, carded a 3-under 68 to snare a two-shot lead over a trio that includes the 2020 Vermont Amateur winner, Russell's older brother, and the reigning champion.

Evan Russell poured in five birdies on the day, but his eagle on the 18th hole capped a 33 on the back nine to position himself atop the leaderboard. Garren Poirier, who won the Vermont Amateur in 2020, Travis Russell and Bryson Richards, on the hunt for his third title since 2021, are tied for second following rounds of 70.
