Thunderstorms forced the suspension of play during the second round of the 118th Vermont Amateur at Burlington Country Club on Wednesday.

And the delay will also cut short the traditional 72-hole championship to just 54 holes, Vermont Golf Association announced on its social media page.

Only 78 out of the 120 golfers were able to finish their second rounds on Wednesday before tournament officials halted action due to the inclement weather.

The Vermont Amateur is slated to resume 9 a.m. Thursday, with the third and final round scheduled approximately for a 1 p.m. start. The field will be cut to the top 40, counting ties, following the completion of Round 2.

Wednesday, Garren Poirier sat 2-under through five holes to take a one-shot lead over brothers Travis and Evan Russell, the Day 1 leader who sprung in front with a 68 round on Tuesday. At 1-under, Lucas Politano is the only other golfer in red for the tournament.
